Airport Express Assistant Download Windows

broken image

I have an Epson RX700 printer connected to an Airport Express base station. I can print from my Mac (20' iMac G5 1.8Ghz, OS X 10.4.4, Airport Extreme card), but not from my PC (2.6 Ghz P4, Windows XP Home) on the same wireless network (PC has Netgear card).
When I send a print job from the PC I don't get any error messages - the driver status window shows that the job was sent, but the printer doesn't respond.
I used Bonjour to on the PC side to set up the printer.
File sharing and internet access seem to be working fine.
Any ideas?

This is geek heaven.

All these features come in a package so small that you might mistake it for the power brick of some other hardware rather than the unit itself. In fact, the AirPort Express looks very similar to the power bricks Apple uses with its current crop of laptops. It's a rounded rectangle with the power plug jutting out of one corner (there is no power cord). The other end offers just three ports: an Ethernet jack in which you plug in your cable or DSL modem, a USB port, and a minijack audio port. Note: It does not have an Ethernet jack allowing you to share your Internet connection by wire to another computer.

I opted to use the AirPort Express to replace my existing wireless network, and when the package arrived I ripped open the box -- and had my first disappointment: the lack of a power cord. In theory, it'd be really cool to plug the unit directly into a wall jack, but since wall jacks in my apartment are in short supply that novelty wore off quickly. And plugging it directly into a power strip behind my home stereo didn't seem practical, either. You'll want to see the signal indicator light from time to time, after all, to make sure your connection is up and running.

The Express Stereo Connection Kit with Monster Cables ($39) saved the day. Included with this kit are the audio cables you'll need, both minijack-to-Toslink and minijack-to-RCA cables, as well as a proper power cord for the AirPort Express. Problem solved.

Next, I ran an Ethernet cable from my cable modem to the AirPort Express, used the Toslink cable to connect it to the MDAT optical audio port on my home theater, and connected a USB printer to it. Then I plugged it in and waited for the signal light to turn green.

The AirPort Express Assistant software walked me step by step through the process of naming my network, naming the AirPort Express itself, setting up security (WPA and WEP are both supported) and creating passwords. Again, I had no snags along the way and the software works with Windows-based machines as well as on Macs. (It would be nice if the AirPort Express Assistant helped you set up an access control list based on MAC address -- or in AirPort parlance, the AirPort ID -- of the wireless cards trying to connect to the network. Instead, you have to run the slightly less user-friendly AirPort Admin Utility to do that.)

Within minutes, I was surfing wirelessly (and, I should point out, printing wirelessly as well). But that's so yesterday. Now it was time for the big test: music!

I turned on my stereo amplifier, set it to the MDAT input, and fired up iTunes on my iBook. At the bottom of the iTunes window was a new selector offering 'Computer' or 'Media Hub' (which is what I had named my AirPort Express). I selected Media Hub, started playing some music, and voila! Alanis Morissette started wailing to me through my stereo speakers. No more shuffling CDs for me!

I've had the AirPort Express for only a few days, but my overall reaction has been very favorable. I do have some concerns, though. The power cord should be part of the AirPort Express package, not part of the Stereo Connection Kit. And in some ways I think the unit may actually be too small. With the power cord in one end and the three other cables coming out of the other end, it's hard to get the AirPort Express to stay where you put it. We all know that cables have minds of their own and they will pull the little AirPort Express around on you. Of course, if you don't use the power cord and simply plug the unit right into a wall jack, that problem goes away. Also, when I'm playing music from iTunes, there's a delay of perhaps five to eight seconds between what shows on your computer and what you hear. It's no big deal, and my laptop has the older 802.11b-based AirPort card in it. The delay might not exist with computers that use the faster 802.11g card.

When used as a base station, the AirPort Express supports only 10 users; by contrast, the pricier, $199 AirPort Base Station supports 50. For home users, that's probably irrelevant. The really tricky bit is hooking the unit up to both your home stereo (or powered speakers) and an Ethernet connection -- especially if your stereo is far away from your cable or DSL modem. It's more likely in that case that you'll be using the AirPort Express as a wireless bridge to extend the reach of your standard AirPort Base Station.

But for those of us with small apartments, dorm rooms or households where your modem is near your stereo, this is an excellent product. It costs less than the full-blown AirPort Base Station, but it does more, in practical home-use terms. It's also a nicely portable wireless hub to use at the office or when you travel. Given its small size, taking it on the road and turning your hotel room into a miniwireless network should be a breeze. Best of all, the AirPort Admin Utility software allows you to dial back the signal strength. That way, other hotel guests or someone who might be sniffing your network won't have an easy time piggybacking on your connection.

All in all, from ease of use to performance to versatility, I'm giving the AirPort Express a big thumbs up.
